A Bit Of Fiction
over 5 years ago – Wed, Sep 26, 2018 at 07:31:17 PM

Hi All!

We are 86% funded! Not too far to go. Thanks to everyone who has pledged and also to everyone who has shared the project!

How about a taste of what Olympus Inc might feel like? Here is a piece of a short fiction set in the Olympus Inc universe that will hopefully inspire you. This is actually one small piece of a larger story that I wrote quite some time ago.

Till Death Do Us Part

Jacob stared up at the sign atop the building whose red neon blazed like a beacon against the dark, moonless night sky. The sign read, “ oe’s D ner” as the upper case J and lower case i on the sign had burned out long ago.

Jacob must have turned to enter the old diner a dozen times, only to turn away again. Each time his hand touched the large metal spoon that served as the door’s handle, he could hear her voice echo in his brain. He replayed their telephone conversation in his mind over and over again. “It’s me,” she said simply when he answered the call. Jacob’s heart skipped a beat each time he remembered the tension in her voice.

“Can’t be,” he thought to himself as he touched the door that led inside the old, chrome covered grease pit. “but what if it really is her?” Paralyzed by indecision, Jacob grabbed and let go of the handle countless times. The thought that Mia might be alive was just too hard to fathom.

Jacob could feel his body ache as he wondered if this was some sort of sick joke. “I saw you die,” he said aloud, oblivious to everyone and everything around him. Feeling the autumn breeze cut through his grimy green military style coat and worn camouflage pants like a knife, Jacob steeled himself, gripped the door handle and finally threw it open.

He took a deep breath and walked in. Jacob looked left, then right. At first he thought the diner was empty. However, he quickly spotted her at a booth on the end....but she wasn’t alone. The man seated next to her was more like a wall than a man. He was a bald white man in his late 20’s dressed in a blue pin stripe suit, white dress shirt and solid brick red tie. He spotted Jacob long before Mia did. The man's eyes were menacing but his body remained still as Jacob approached.

“Mia?” Jacob said softly as he reached the booth. Mia looked up slowly with fear and dismay written on her face. “Jacob,” she softly said as tears began to well up in her eyes. She shook her head from side to side and opened her mouth to speak again, but the big man rose before she could utter a word.

“We need you to do something for us or next time she’ll be dead for real,” the man said nonchalantly. “We need you to…” He was quickly cut off as Jacob’s hands shot out in a flurry of blows. The first two punches caught the big man in the windpipe and caused him to stagger backward, clutching his throat.

Although not a particularly muscular man or an intimidating figure, Jacob was like a machine when it came to combat. His mind could quickly calculate the best place to strike a man and then drive his limbs into action. The next blow he delivered was a jumping spin kick that caught the big man on the side of the head. Instead of falling down, the man simply took another step back.

“Damn, that would have dropped a rhino,” Jacob thought as the big man shook his head and quickly recovered from Jacob’s strikes. Jacob took a step back and let the man come to him. As he approached, Jacob feigned a front kick and quickly swept the man’s legs out from underneath him.

“You’ve just made the worst mistake of your life,” the man said as he reached into his pants pocket, pulled out what looked like a car alarm remote and pointed it at Mia. As the big man pushed the button, Jacob heard a muffled beep, followed by a loud pop and then felt something wet hit the left side of his face. Jacob reached up with his left hand and absently wiped at the wet spot on his cheek. As he slowly brought his hand up in front of his face, Jacob could see it was covered in blood.

Jacob told himself not to look, but he found his head swiveling toward Mia. Mia’s body was slumped down in the booth. Her head, which once held her beautiful blue eyes, delicate lips and long golden blond hair, was no longer attached to her shoulders. It was gone, along with a small portion of the back of the booth that was blasted away as the bomb in her head detonated. Her delicate pink sweater and favorite white blouse were covered in blood and brain matter, along with most of the booth and the walls on either side of her body. Oddly, the first thing that struck Jacob was surprise that the explosion was so quiet.

His surprise and morbid curiosity quickly turned to anger as the realization of Mia’s death hit him like a ton of bricks. Jacob turned back to the man, who had regained his footing. Although still wearing the expensive suit, any illusion that this thing in front of him was human had melted away. Instead, Jacob saw what looked like a humanoid lizard complete with a tail that sprouted through the rear of the suit pants.

“All we wanted was for you to do a little something for us and you had to go and make it all complicated,” the creature hissed as it slowly rose, shaking his head as if to scold Jacob. “I’ll kill you!” Jacob screamed as he tightly clenched his fists and gritted his teeth.

“I don’t die so easy,” the Spartus stated calmly and began to smirk. Jacob’s hands were a blur as he drew the two compact Smith & Wesson ASPs from custom made holsters, one in the small of his back and the other over his left shoulder. He squeezed off two shots from each of the pistols and the Orichalcum rounds slammed into the man’s torso. This only elicited a grin from the big man as the wounds immediately closed. “Like I said, I don’t die that easily,” the man said as he smiled and revealed a mouth full of jagged teeth.

Jacob simply replied with a deep guttural growl, his face a mask of hatred and rage. This seemed to confuse the big man, who was obviously used to people running in terror when they saw his true form. Jacob dropped his pistols and focused for a moment. He could feel the energy coalescing around his hands as it formed into a pair of translucent brass knuckles that crackled with electricity. Uncertain of exactly what was happening, the Spartus launched a front kick at Jacob’s midsection with a speed that didn’t match its size. However, this is exactly what Jacob was waiting for. Jacob easily slapped the leg away and threw three incredibly fast punches into the head of the beast. Jacob was rewarded with a river of green ichor that streamed from the creatures nose. The creature grabbed his face and howled in pain.

“I don’t understand”, the creature said with a look of complete amazement. “Well then, let me see if I can knock some sense into that thick skull of yours,” Jacob retorted through gritted teeth as he threw three more punches to the creature’s head. Momentarily stunned, the Spartus fell to the ground. “You can’t kill me,“ the creature said weakly, his grin revealing the loss of several of his teeth. “I am invulnerable.”

“Well, that ain’t entirely true,“ Jacob said with a chilling smirk as he loomed over the creature. The Spartus opened its mouth as if to speak, but Jacob drew an Orichalcum knife from his boot and drove it into the creature’s left eye. The knife sunk into the creature all the way up to the hilt. The creature gasped and fell dead. Jacob stood silently looking from the body of the Spartus and back to what remained of Jacob’s wife.

Several minutes went by before sorrow was replaced by years of training. Trembling with grief and the last vestiges of rage and adrenaline, Jacob reached into the creature’s jacket pocket and flipped open a wallet. “Adrian Stein,” Jacob said to himself as he flipped open the man’s wallet and read the name on the license. It didn’t ring any bells, but he really didn’t expect it to.

Jacob quickly rummaged through the wallet, but it yielded no clues. Then he spotted the black case in the opposite jacket pocket. “Cell Phone. Bingo,” Jacob whispered to no one in particular, oblivious to the sirens that were rapidly approaching. He accessed the phone’s recently dialed list and saw that the last 5 calls were to the same local number.

Jacob holstered both pistols and sheathed his knife as he walked back toward the booth where his wife sat only minutes earlier. He slipped the simple gold band from her limp hand, kissed it and began to sob uncontrollably. He shook himself out of his grief, wiped his tears with the back of his hand and raced for the front door. “Good Bye Mia,” Jacob said as he glanced back at the headless corpse of his wife. “Don’t you worry. I’ll make them pay for this,” he shouted through gritted teeth as he threw open the front door to the diner and raced out into the night.

Let me introduce you to the person behind the picture
over 5 years ago – Mon, Sep 24, 2018 at 08:08:48 AM

I am proud to announce that we are 79% funded with 15 days to go. Once we fund, we can start working on some amazing stretch goals! Please don't forget about the various Add-Ons that are available if you need a copy of the Olympus Inc book or want to grab the Fabled Environments catalog. If you'd like to make your mark on the book, there are two levels available that will let you create an IMB, NPC or Slosi and have your work credited in the book.

I know that you've seen this image before. This is probably one of my favorite art pieces that has been created for Olympus Inc. Today, I wanted to introduce you to the Cyclospawn behind the image.

Darius Davos

At seven feet tall, Darius literally towers above other artists. With his height, muscular frame and rugged good looks, most people think Darius is a professional football or basketball player. However, Darius is neither of these.

Darius is an up-and-coming metal sculptor from the Lower East Side who is known for his large metal pieces. He has had several installations throughout the city and beyond, including a life-size bronze horse that appears to gallop when driven by the wind and a flock of amazing, life-like bronze geese outside the headquarters of the Nature Advocacy Group.

What Sleepers don’t know is that Darius is also a Cyclospawn who is renowned for his work with Orichalcum. The metal components of his melee weapons contain intricate etchings, which have become his signature. His divine metal pieces, like his mundane pieces, are sought after by demigods and IMBs alike. However, Darius is a perfectionist and seems more comfortable with his sculptures than living creatures.
